THE ARTISTS :: THE WORK :: THE EVENT :: |
|
Debut Monterey artists will present their work in a show that will culminate with the premiere of Esoteric Films' Black Thunder: America's Most Hated Crimefighter on January 18, 2003. The art show, Working Title: Artists in Progress, will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 572 C Van Buren Street, Monterey, behind Colton Hall, with an Artists' Reception at 6 p.m. Black Thunder, written and directed by event organizer Donaldo Prescod, will show in Monterey's Osio Theatre at 10 p.m. and midnight. Tickets to the film are $5, there is no charge for the rest of the showings. Working Title: Artists in Progress validates the work of young talented people whose career paths may not lead them to high-priced galleries or Hollywood, but who right now are expressing themselves in a very real and valuable way. An emerging still photographer himself, Film Writer/Director Donaldo Prescod was not surprised to discover a number of actors in his cast creating artistic works in other media. "As I developed the idea of an art show, I found more and more people wanting to participate," he said. "We've made things we're proud of, and want to share the results of our work. We realized you don't have to be in a Carmel Gallery or a Hollywood Studio for that to happen." The show will feature Monterey County artists who have never shown their work. For these young people, life is a work in progress. These pieces are snapshots, real expressions of unique and constantly changing perspectives. All showing artists will be present to discuss their work during the Artists' Reception (6-8 p.m.) and some pieces will be available for purchase. Black Thunder: America's Most Hated Crimefighter is a satirical blaxploitation action-comedy, and a sequel to Prescod's immensely popular first film Black Thunder. In Black Thunder: America's Most Hated Crimefighter, which features original music from Jaimason Berkheimer and Nick Schaupp, Black Thunder, played by Daniel Prescod, has retired from fighting crime to start a successful movie production company. When two tumultuous villains, Demetri (Corey Atkison) and Mojo (the puppet) plague the city with a deadly virus, the outbreak especially affects Black Thunder's actors, crippling the production of his latest film and leaving the world's greatest vigilante crime fighter no other choice than to come out of retirement and take down his nemeses. The film, which is not rated, contains adult language, sexual content, obscene puppetry, and nudity. It is recommended for mature audiences. Gala attire is encouraged for the 10 p.m Premiere of Black Thunder: America's Most Hated Crimefighter at Monterey's Osio Theatre. There will be a second showing at midnight. The public is invited to attend Working Title: Artists in Progress at 572 C Van Buren Street, Monterey, behind Colton Hall from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with an Artists' Reception beginning at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served. There is no charge for Working Title. Tickets to Black Thunder are $5. ### |
